The Growlers franchise was formally announced in November of 2013, with the team beginning play in the 2014 season. The team’s name was chosen in a name-the-team contest, and the city’s rich brewing tradition has been a centralized theme in their promotions, including their mascot, named Porter.
The team developed an instant rivalry with the Battle Creek Bombers, who are the only other franchise from Michigan in the Northwoods League and the I-94 Rivalry Cup was born. The Growlers won the Rivalry Cup in their inaugural season, beating the Bombers five games to three. The team won their first Division Championship in 2018 after making it to the playoffs as a wild card. The team would end up losing in the League Championship finals three games to one.
